In this episode of Five Minutes or Less, the host interviews Kevin Tomlinson, co-host of the Writers Inc Podcast. Kevin shares his extensive experience in launching around 1,000 different podcasts, including the popular Word Slinger podcast. He also discusses his best and worst shows, highlighting Self-Publishing Insiders as his best, which helped thousands of authors. He refrains from naming his worst show but mentions an episode where the guest failed to understand the show's concept.
I'm excited to share some insights from my recent podcast episode where I had the pleasure of interviewing Kevin Tumlinson, the co-host of the Writers Inc Podcast.
Kevin is a podcast veteran, having launched around 1,000 different shows over the years. Yes, you read that right, 1,000! His passion for the topics he explores is what fuels his podcasting journey. One of his popular shows, the Wordslinger Podcast, served as an educational platform where he engaged with authors and entrepreneurs about their business operations.
One of his proudest achievements is the Self-Publishing Insiders show for Draft Digital. Even though he's no longer hosting, he takes pride in how it has supported thousands of authors in his community. As for the not-so-great experiences, Kevin shared a funny anecdote about a guest who didn't quite grasp the concept of the show. But hey, we live and learn, right?
I'm sure you're as intrigued as I was during our conversation. If you want to hear more about Kevin's experiences, lessons learned, and his journey in the podcasting world, tune into the latest episode of Podcast Host Army.

Josh (00:00:00) - We got five minutes on the clock. What is your name and what is your podcast show?
Kevin (00:00:05) - I'm Kevin Tomlinson and I'm one of the hosts of the Writers Inc. podcast.
Josh (00:00:10) - The Writers Inc. podcast show. Now we're going to talk about launching what made you launch that show.
Kevin (00:00:19) - So true confession. I was not one of the ones who launched that show specifically. I came on board later, but I've launched probably 1000 different podcasts over the years. And the thing that's always driven me is the topic. Uh, so, for example, I had a long running show called The Word Slinger Podcast, which became very popular in the indie author space. And I launched that show specifically because I wanted to talk to people about how they were operating their businesses as authors or outside entrepreneurs or something like that. It was an education thing for me more than anything else.
Josh (00:00:51) - Yeah. Did I hear correctly? You've launched 100 podcast shows.
Kevin (00:00:56) - At least over the past ten years or so? Yeah, since podcasting became a thing, I've probably launched at least 100 over the over the year.
Kevin (00:01:04) - I no longer host all of those, but I have been a part of lots and lots of podcasts. We're going to say at least 100.
Josh (00:01:11) - Wow. I've never met. I've launched 15 and I thought I was a champion. Congratulations. Hey, I still.
Kevin (00:01:18) - Think you're a champion.
Josh (00:01:19) - But man. Holy moly. All right, out of all the shows you've launched, which one has been the best show and worst show and why?
Kevin (00:01:29) - Best show was one I did actually for a company called Draft Digital called Self-publishing Insiders, and that's been it's still running, although I'm no longer a host on that show. Uh, that's only a recent development, but that show helps thousands and thousands of authors, which is the community I'm part of. So that's the one I've always been the most proud of.
Josh (00:01:52) - Wow. So the best and the worst. And you've done hundreds of them. Do you ever, like, get pinged by someone who, on a show that you launched ten years ago and they're like, hey, could I be on your show?
Kevin (00:02:01) - I still yes, uh, regularly.
Kevin (00:02:03) - I still get people who asked to be on the Word Slinger podcast, because that one was always the most popular when I was known for. Yeah, I became the voice of indie publishing on that show. That's what I was. That's that's the nickname I was given.
Josh (00:02:16) - Was your intro in your voice that you did?
Kevin (00:02:18) - Oh my gosh. So I had I actually paid somebody to do an intro and it was something like, you know, uh, the guy who created Pants Optional and, uh, did a whole, a whole spiel, and unfortunately, that guy's not around anymore. But yeah, that was that was the one I was known for. It was the it's all about the story here. That was the that was the whole pitch, you know, getting the story behind your business.
Josh (00:02:40) - Wow. I'm meeting a true legend out of all the out of all the shows that you've launched, how many episodes are interviews or things do you think you have personally been on?
Kevin (00:02:50) - Wow. Uh, been on or conducted? Because I've done both quite a bit.
Kevin (00:02:55) - And I mean, it's in the thousands, easily, easily the thousands because, um, the various podcasts that one point I was hosting, I was either a host or co-host of eight different shows at the same time. And so I was doing every day of the week. I was podcasting, uh, every day of the week. I had a new guest, you know, someone from somewhere in some industry. It ranged from publishing to, uh, sometimes I interviewed an octogenarian with a program called Never Leave the Playground. Uh, so I've had a lot of really. And I've interviewed a lot of famous people, uh, a lot of famous authors in particular. Yeah. Um, yeah, I just thousands. The answer is thousands. I could I've lost count.
Josh (00:03:35) - If you could go back and just yank one out of existence where you're like, I wish I would have never published that. What would that one be?
Kevin (00:03:41) - Uh, I don't want to name any names, but there was somebody that did not get the concept of the show.
Kevin (00:03:49) - Uh, showed up, uh, late. The the audio was terrible. The they were taking a walk next to a busy highway. Uh, but the the information itself and the guests themselves, I really wanted to exist, so.
Josh (00:04:03) - Yeah. True. All right. One more time. Your name and your podcast show.
Kevin (00:04:08) - I am Kevin Tomlinson. And right now I'm a co-host on the Writers Inc podcast.
Josh (00:04:14) - Super cool. Hey, guys.
