I'm excited to share some insights from the latest Podcast Host Army where I had an enlightening conversation with Scott Goodrich, the host of Grow Your Damn Business podcast.
1️⃣ Consistency is Key: Scott emphasized the importance of consistency in podcasting. It's not about immediate success or sponsorship, but about playing the long game. He introduced me to the term "pod fade," which is when podcasters lose their momentum due to not reaching their desired audience. His advice? Stay consistent, even when the going gets tough.
2️⃣ The Power of Personality: Scott started his podcast as a platform to share his personality and build trust with his audience. His love for radio made podcasting a natural fit for him. It's a reminder that our unique personalities can be our greatest asset in connecting with our audience.
3️⃣ Quality Over Quantity: Scott confessed that he initially focused too much on the numbers. His advice to fellow podcasters? Focus more on the audience and the value you're providing. It's about making a difference, not just making a noise.
4️⃣ Exciting Guests: Scott's podcast has been so well-received that he has more guests wanting to come on than he can accommodate! He's particularly excited about an upcoming episode with Bob Berg, the author of the Go-Giver series.
I hope these insights spark your curiosity and inspire you to tune into my podcast. Remember, it's not just about listening, it's about learning and growing together.

00:25 - Consistency is Key
02:05 - Starting a Podcast
04:27 - Focusing on Audience
Josh (00:00:03) - All right. We got five minutes on the clock. What's your name and what's your podcast show?
Scott (00:00:08) - Hey there. My name is Scott Goodrich and thanks for having me. Josh. The podcast is called To Grow Your Damn Business.
Josh (00:00:13) - Grow Your Damn Business. So we're going to talk a little bit about growth today. Uh, what have you learned over the years of doing this? What milestones have you hit? Kind of give us an idea of what you've accomplished through your podcast show.
Scott (00:00:25) - Yeah. And still relatively new. Josh, on the on the podcast, it's episode 30 coming out this week, one a week since the June haven't missed a week. So first lesson consistency. You'll hear it time and again. And anyone looking to start you got to stay at it. Uh, so that's that's the first thing. Don't get pod fade. Don't slow down and don't run away from something just because you don't get that first sponsor that's going to pay you the million dollars looking for that ain't going to happen.
Scott (00:00:49) - So the consistency is key.
Josh (00:00:51) - Yeah. So pod fade. You know what? What is that for people who listening and who never heard that before.
Scott (00:00:58) - Sure. And and you know new term for me as well being relatively and only half a year into this. But it's just really about the, the frustrations and the how you can get tired from recording some shows that you think are good, putting out some content that you think has got a lot of value. And then, you know, am I reaching the ears and or the eyes that I'm looking to reach through my show? And when that doesn't happen right away, you can be like, well, is this really worth it? Like, is this time and energy and effort and putting into it and so you fade. Yeah. The the intensity dies down. You miss a few weeks, you miss a month, and all of a sudden that consistency goes away. And going back to what I started with, the first thing that I would share with you is just just be consistent and stay after it.
Scott (00:01:38) - That's going to allow you to play. You gotta play the longer game here than trying to be a quick hitter. Unless you're a celebrity coming to it with an already and having an audience and you're just out there independently trying to build something, the consistency has got to be step one.
Josh (00:01:49) - Yeah. So you're your business coach, you're an investor. You've you've done all these things for businesses. You're you're a growth expert for business. Right. And now you're stepping in the world of podcasting. Why did you start a podcast show.
Josh (00:02:04) - Well.
Scott (00:02:05) - First off, just as I'm launching really in getting into my coaching practice after long years of doing other things, was it was a way to share a little bit about myself and my personality and just bring some trust to folks that that may hear this voice for the first time in this particular environment. So that was first and foremost. And secondly, Joshua, I had a I had a few stints on the radio like a million years ago and just loved it. And obviously, you know, podcasting is kind of that new media form that that is so similar to, to radio.
Scott (00:02:37) - You know, I'll say back in the day, as an, as an older guy, but, you know, just have always had that, that love of this way of communicating with others. So I think it came together nicely. It was a natural fit. Um, I was a guest first and just love that experience so much. So said, okay, there's something here that I can I can share with others and so jumped into the hosting side of things.
Josh (00:02:56) - Yeah. Best expectation met and maybe a missed expectation that as starting a podcast show what did you what did you think was going to happen that didn't or what you know what what did you experience that you were like, man, I'm so glad it did.
Scott (00:03:12) - Uh. Let's see. So, so the the thing that that's been great is I've actually had a great response. So if you're putting out good, solid content and you're being consistent, folks will want to come on your show. And frankly, even in my newness right of 30 episode mark and getting started, I end up turning down more guests than than have come on.
Scott (00:03:30) - So it's helpful to be in that position. So, you know, that's that's meant and I've had some exciting guests. Come on. I've got one that I'm releasing this week that I'm especially excited about. So that that's real good. Um, for those that aren't familiar, but with Bob Berg, Bob Berg is the author of the Go Giver series, and I recorded with Bob a couple of weeks ago, and his episode, uh, is releasing this week as the 30th episode. So super excited about that. Um, expectations not met. Look, I'm a numbers guy, and you can get wrapped around the axle if you're looking at the numbers all the time, and it takes a bit to realize that it is not about how many, but who you know. What is the audience that you're tracking? What is it made up of? Because ultimately you do want it to be talking to people that are interested in the topics that you have, and there are ways that you can go about getting more ears and eyes on your show.
Scott (00:04:17) - But that may not be the right answer. And that work or money spent to try to make that happen is not the right way to spend your money. Be more focused on who is listening than how many.
Josh (00:04:27) - Yeah, that's such a good point. We, uh, myself included, uh, focus so much on the downloads or how many views, how many engagements. And really, if one person listened and they bought something or they did something, the desired action, that was a win. So man, really great point, Scott. Name of your show one more time. And where can people find it?
Scott (00:04:48) - Sure, it's to grow your Damn business podcast and great and businesses and all the major podcast platforms. It's under the YouTube channel at the same name. And I've got a website called Do the Same Thing, Grow Your Damn business.com.
Josh (00:04:59) - Awesome. And all this was under five minutes. I hope you guys enjoyed. See you on the next episode.

I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, going all the way back to my teenage years when I ran my own lawnmowing service, managed a paper route and sold products door to door.
Upon graduating from college, I began a career working in sales and operations leadership for several entrepreneurs. These opportunities provided me with great insight into what makes a great organization tick, as well as causes a company pain.
Six years ago I relit the entrepreneurial flame and bought my own small business. My learning journey continued and I experienced first-hand what it takes to build a successful business.
I am so excited that my journey has led me here, working as a Professional EOS Implementer, sharing EOS and helping entrepreneurs grow their companies into healthy businesses.
